Newsday (Suffolk Edition) from Melville, New York (2024)

Some Enchanted Evening? Not for Yonkers Bettors Yonkers Commissioner George Monaghan has a quaint habit of blaming the USTA for everything that's wrong with harness racing -but he could thank nobody but himself for the three-ring circus that took place at Yonkers Raceway last night. It began as an uneventful evening at the formless Westchester plant. The biggest news was supposed to have been that Presiding Judge John Cashman of Garden City had been replaced by Eugene Flagg. Then things started to happen. The first incident was the fact that Frisco Dream was permitted to start in the Class CC: seeond race.

Frisco Dream was entered in this event Thursday morning, then happened to win in the lower class the very same night. That victory advanced Frisco Dream to Class but there he was, large as life, against SIX other legitimate CC pacers in the second race. According to Monaghan's rule book, this sort of thing is permissible. But something should be done to correct. this situation.

Frisco Dream could have been "scratched" even if it meant incurring the wrath of management. Instead, Monaghan "protected" the public by having the following "tip" printed in the program for the second race: "Frisco Dream was eligible to this race when entered." The public, since Class is higher than Class CC, sent Frisco Dream postward as the even-money favorite. He put on a tremendous performance but just wasn't good enough to overhaul Beppy Hanover Flagg also made his first impression in this race, indicating that perhaps he belongs atop a pole somewhere instead of in the judge's box. Beppy Hanover, driven by Dick Thomas, was the winner all right, but it certainly appeared that the victor caused Gay Widow to break at the first turn by cutting sharply in front of her. Nary an objection was forthcoming from Flagg and his associates.

The next bit of excitement came shortly after the fourth race when the "Iron Curtain" was dropped on the Fourth Estate. An accident involving three horses occurred on the first turn. The race continued and Patricia Captain ($39.30) was officially declared the winner. Again there was no objection. When the press phoned to ask what happened, Trot Judge John Cashman Replaced as Head Man at Yonkers the operator said the judges had "not looked" at the pictures and would issue a statement when they did.

The time then was 9:57. At 10:09 the bulletin, signed by Flagg, arrived saying there had been "no interference." It was fortunate that Flagg's report brought such glad tidings. But just what would have happened if the judges had found something wrong in the films of the race? The commissioner said this is a new policy. Reporters will not be able to "fraternize" with officials over the phone. They will receive bulletins.

Further questions are to be directed to Monaghan. That, of course, depends on whether he can be reached. This was the latest chapter in the history of Commissioner Monaghan. Yonkers Results Tonight's Trot Entries at Yonkers FIRST Trot. 1 Mile.
