How to check the balance on middle class tax refund? ›

Click "Login" and then "Register Now." Follow the steps to create your User ID and Password and get your four-digit PIN (you can also get a PIN by calling 1-800-240-0223). For cards with more than one name, please use the primary cardholder information (listed first on the card) for online or mobile app registration.

However, the FTB has noted that there are some MCTR debit card recipients who have not yet activated their MCTR cards or who have not used their MCTR funds. MCTR debit card recipients who have not activated their cards will receive an activation reminder letter that includes instructions to activate their debit card.

Taxable income

The MCTR payment is not taxable for California state income tax purposes. You do not need to claim the payment as income on your California income tax return.
